Optimized broadband cable network products
and services including DOCSIS 3.1 and platforms

Technetix was incorporated in 1990, initially focused on both cable and satellite television equipment. Quickly identifying the potential in the cable market, they demonstrated their key strength of providing the market with customer-led innovations for the headend, access network and in-home environments.

Technetix now offers a complete line of DOCSIS 3.1 Taps and Line Passives compatible with the most important formats including Regal, Motorola, and SA. The DOCSIS 3.1 new broadband spec presents unprecedented benefits for cable operators, featuring:
• gigabit download and upload speeds,
• higher bandwidth capacity,
• greater operational efficiencies,
• improved quality control, and
• lower costs.

DOCSIS 3.1 / Overview

With the deployment of DOCSIS 3.1, field and maintenance technicians will be faced with new challenges due to the use of the new technology. In particular, DOCSIS 3.1 introduces new technologies including OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) and modulation profiles that provide unprecedented flexibility and capability.

Operators can use DOCSIS 3.1 to utilize portions of the plant that previously could not carry traditional QAM’s. Operators can also leverage DOCSIS 3.1 to gain additional capacity and efficiency to maximize their utilization of the existing plant.

Knowing what to look for and how to evaluate DOCSIS 3.1 is critical for the field technician.

Benefits to be realized with all DOCSIS 3.1 requirements met:

• Network upstream and downstream performance is dramatically increased, comparable to fiber advantages, without the significant investment of time and expense to deploy fiber throughout the entire network;
• Decrease powering by up to 40% while maximizing performance;
• Future-proof your existing investment as you increase in density and scale;
• TCO includes building in necessary flexibility throughout the network to adjust as needed; deployment is a gradual migration;
• DOCSIS 3.1 continues to evolve: the DBX Platform will allow the operator to introduce additional performance capabilities, plus mitigate maintenance and increase TCO efficiencies.

DOCSIS 3.1 benefits and Deploying Remote PHY /
• Technetix DBx Platform

PLC, the PHY link channel, is the primary building block of DOCSIS 3.1.
Technetix’ DBx Platform, allows MSOs to introduce a Remote PHY, setup in an existing DBx product benefiting from a DAA (Distributed Access Architecture).

A DAA is designed to move several elements related to the Physical layer (PHY) from the headend to the access network. By pushing these elements deeper into the network to the Remote PHY device, the best possible quality signal can be generated.

OFDM building blocks are the key to optimal performance and begins with the PHY to realize the full benefits of DOCSIS 3.1.

Deployment of DOCSIS 3.1 in your network is gradual migration

With Technetix’s DBx Platform modular approach, implementation is easy and cost efficient, maintaining control over TCO. Components are designed to meet the specific network’s increasing demands as they are needed.

Underlying this concept is that all DBx components are backwards compatible with the existing infrastructure, preserving the initial network infrastructure investment, and preparing for meeting the future needs of the network.

DBx Platform / Optional Upgrades

Investment begins with DBx components to expand capabilities of existing instruments, mitigating the need to invest in replacing the entire instrument.

DBx components expand performance throughout the Broadband / Optical network while providing greater power efficiency and faster downstream and upstream capacities.

Investment in future system components is simpler, more efficient, and further enhances performance capabilities while controlling network TCO.

DBx Diplex Filters

A wide variety of diplex filters is available to accommodate current and future network needs.

Upgrades to future band-splits just by the swap of a diplex filter and reconfiguration through software.

Diplex filters are universally usable in all amplifier types within a specific form factor (strand or cabinet).

1. Upgrade the midsplit by simply changing the the Diplex filter out.

DBx Transmitters and Receivers

Transmitter
• DOCSIS 3.1 Ready
• RF Specifications equal similar to pure-RF module
• Standard optical transmit level 3dBm ( -3 to +6 possible – MOQ)
• Different wavelength options available (1310nm, 1550nm, CWDM)
• One universal module for the entire DBx product range

2. Upgrade to a node in only a few minutes by changing out your downstream module and upstream module to a Transmitter and Receiver.

Receiver
• 1.2GHz and DOCSIS 3.1 Ready
• Wide-band receiver with single RF output (1100 to 1650nm)
• Optical input range from -7 dBm to +1 dBm with optical AGC
• Easy RF to optical upgrade with similar RF output level
• One universal module for the entire DBx product range

DBx Remote PHY

• A DAA is designed to move several elements related to the Physical layer (PHY) from the headend to the access network.
• By pushing these elements deeper into the network to the Remote PHY device, the best possible quality signal can be generated.
• The DBx platform allows MSOs to introduce a Remote PHY setup in an existing DBx product benefiting from a DAA.

3. Upgrade to Remote PHY for future needs as required with DBx Remote PHY for Distributed Access Architecture (DAA)

DBx Amplifiers

As needs expand, the DBx Series is upgradable with addition of the required amplifier with ability to change out required modules and expand functionality as needs dictate.

Technetix offers a wide array of amplifiers to configure to your specific system.

4. Upgrade with addition of the required DBx Series amplifier that is most functional to meet your network needs.

New benefits with the DOCSIS 3.1 /
• Technetix’ Virtual Segmentation™

Technetix’ Virtual Segmentation™ (VS) solution allows operators to deploy PHY without the need for fiber deployment. VS enables 10 Gbps of symmetrical traffic to travel over a coaxial medium within the trunk lines by utilizing the broad RF spectrum (5 MHz to 3 GHz) to overlay Ethernet traffic over coax.

VS is a low-latency and low-power solution that provides the operator with an Ethernet pipe over coax. This starts and ends with an 10G SFP+ connection that can be used to link the core in the Headend and the PHY in the field. The high bandwidth(10 Gbps) and low latency (IEEE 1588v2) of VS ensures the smooth operation of the PHY.

A VS link is deployed between the core and the PHY, this consists of three main components: a Transmitter (VS TX), Repeater(s) (VS RP), and a Receiver (VS RX & RPD). The VS link also includes a control module which enables the operator to integrate the VS link into their own network monitoring systems.

VS provides great savings in CAPEX compared to deploying R-PHY via fiber. Operators can deploy R-PHY in little time at a very low cost, and replacing existing amplfiers on the trunk line with low power-consuming VS nodes will also lead to a reduction in energy consumption.
